All of these pictures are from the 1870s. Note that even the young lad shining shoes is wearing a vest, jacket and hat and an ascot-type tie. All of these people are lower-class physical laborers or destitute poor doing day labor/vending in the streets. And not one of them is running around in pajamas. Not one. They comported themselves with dignity and mutual respect. Did they all smell like fresh-cut lilac? Probably not. And neither shall any of us when we no longer have access to clean running water and unlimited toiletries. I know I won’t. I have bought a decade’s worth of rock salt deodorant, but who knows if I will be able to keep it or use it in the future?
The notion that people today – the very poorest of which almost certainly have a SmartPhone, and live in a single-family dwelling with electricity and hot running water, and many have a car – cannot afford to buy proper clothes is utterly ridiculous. People today FREELY CHOOSE to run around looking like slobs and/or mostly naked. It is a completely free choice.
